Prayer with scriptures for peaceful sleep
Wisdom and Discretion | Proverbs 3:21-26
My son, let them not depart from your eyes—
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
The scripture opens with addressing us as a child; as a son obeys his father, we have to obey the scriptures to receive God’s promises for us. He promises us sweet sleep without torment and agitation, which we’ll discover in the remainder of this scripture how to achieve. As His children, we are entitled through Christ, to have every promise God gives us in scripture. In Galations 3:26-29, God’s law states, “you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Now God promises to Abraham is to “make (him) exceedingly fruitful; and (God), will make nations of (him), and kings shall come after (him), and (God) will establish (His) covenant between (Him) and (Abraham) and (Abrahams’) descendants after (him). Genesis 17:6-7.
And so, as heirs of every promise, including peaceful sleep, we are given a command, “Let.” Although, we are heirs to God’s promises and preferred life, it is not a given just because we are saved through Jesus Christ! We MUST obey His laws and ordinances in order to receive any promise. So as heirs, which we know we are because of how the scriptures addresses us as sons or children, we are immediately commanded through the word. “Let.” This is a powerful word. It means to allow or give consent for something.
It is the same command that God uses in the opening of Genesis, how He created the world and heavens, or rather through this command, God gives consent for heavens and earth to exist. Genesis 1:3, “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” Genesis 1:6-8 “Then God said, “Let there be a firmament… Thus God made the firmament… And God called the firmament Heaven.” God continues to command, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together… Let the earth bring forth grass… Let there be lights in the firmament… Let the waters abound with an abundance of creatures… Let the earth bring forth the living creature… Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” This is the history of creation from God’s command through, “Let.”
And so God also commands, “Let them (sound wisdom and discretion) not depart from your eyes—”
So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
It is only through our obedience to His command, to not loose sight of SOUND wisdom and discretion, that we receive “life to (our) soul and grace to (our) neck.” When Solomon (the author of Proverbs) refers to wisdom, it isn’t earthly wisdom, but heavenly wisdom. James 3:15-17 draws a clear line between the two, “This wisdom does not descend from above, but is EARTHLY, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil things are there. But the wisdom that is from above, (from HEAVEN,) is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”
Therefore, it is through SOUND wisdom AND discretion, not IF and not OR, but with both heavenly wisdom and discretion. The word “discretion” can mean, 1. to behave or speak without offense or revealing private matters, or 2. to use personal judgement to make a decision aka to use your own discretion. So, through heavenly wisdom, which comes from the reading of scriptures and obeying God’s commands for you life, you should now be able to use your own discretion with how to apply God’s laws in your everyday life.
Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
By seeing heavenly wisdom in all situations of life, and speaking gracefully the truth of all matters, —“let them not depart from your eyes… sound wisdom and discretion; So they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck” — then we receive the promises of God, then we have no worry for evil, then we will walk safely in our way without stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
And so, sweet sleep is not just promised after follow these commands we just revealed, but sweet sleep is inevitable and is a law — God’s command for your life. And so we know that insomnia, sleep apnea and nightmares are not His preferred life for us.
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
For the Lord will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught.
Therefore, through Jesus Christ, which we accept as our Lord and Savior, will intercede on our behalf to our Father in Heaven, so that we do not worry or doubt anymore. Because "we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" 1 John 2:1. Because "Christ Jesus is the One having died, but more, having been raised, Who also is at the right hand of God, Who also intercedes for us!" Romans 8:34. Our confidence is not just in scriptures, but on the reliance of God’s relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ.
Prayer for Sweet & Peaceful Sleep
Now let’s pray for everyone who come to this page, no matter what day or time of night you may read this. I pray to You, our Father in heaven, to let us abide in You, and Your word in us, so that You may hear our cries and sleepless nights that torment us. For Your thoughts of us, are good, and not of evil, to give us a hope and a future. Let our confidence be in Your love, let our confidence be in Your promise, let our confidence be in Your everlasting covenant with us through Jesus Christ, who left us and gave the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank You God, for Your commands of righteousness and grace. Thank You Father, for the gift of obedience. And thank You Lord, for Your protection and perfect peace. I pray that You let the Power of the Holy Spirit lead us to SOUND wisdom and discretion, for You promise grace in our neck as we sleep, and You promise us sweet and peaceful sleep as we lie down before bed. May You grace us with your presence every night, though we do not deserve, but through Your mercy and our obedience, we no longer are tormented with a racing mind before bed, but we are now assured with a sound mind of all Your promises for our lives.
In Jesus name,
Amen
